When John Dunne, internationally renowned climber and managing director of the Manchester Climbing Centre, and Colin Boothroyd, managing director of Entre-Prises Climbing Walls started exploring the various climbing wall design possibilities available in Valley House, they were pleased to find that the steel structures within the building provided an excellent blank canvas for a strong and creative climbing centre design.
Bringing together John’s experience and knowledge gained through developing the very successful Manchester Climbing Centre, and Entre-Prises’ solid understanding of safety, structural and fabrication issues, the arrangement of the various walls, profiles, climbing and bouldering surfaces and colour schemes were determined.
‘Variety’ was a core value through the development of the Climbing Centre. John recognised that the key to a centre’s success is through providing a variety of climbing experiences for climbers of all types and abilities and Entre-Prises were eager to exhibit their wide range of climbing wall surfaces and approaches.
We believe the resulting Harrogate Climbing Centre to be the leading example of modern climbing wall design. Entre-Prises have a flagship Centre that exhibits a full range of climbing surface designs (Wacky wood, international competition speed walls, convex and concave surfaces, cracks, tufas, pockets etc) and Harrogate has a climbing facility that will appeal to all ages and ability levels.
