The Climbing Wall Leading Award is an additional qualification for Single Pitch Award or Climbing Wall Award Holders, which is for people who wish to instruct lead climbing skills on indoor and outdoor climbing structures. The course is run in two parts, training (1 day) and assessment (1 day).
The process for the CWLA scheme is as follows:
- Personal experience: Registration is only open to holders of either the Climbing Wall Award (CWA) or the Single Pitch Award (SPA). Other requirements include:
• Have led a minimum of 50 different routes on at least three different walls and have belayed a leader on a minimum of 50 climbs
• Have at least half of those routes led must be at a grade of French 6a or above
• You must also have logged 20 sessions as a CWA or SPA holder
• Large major public walls must be visited. - Registration: Before undertaking a training course you should register on the appropriate scheme with the training board of the country in which you live:
• England (MLTE)
• Wales (MLTW)
• Scotland (MLTS)
• Northern Ireland (MLTNI) - Training course: To attend a training course, requirements include:
• Minimum 18 years of age
• See other requirements above - Consolidation period: You will learn a great deal on your training course and will need some time to practice and put your new knowledge into action. Your course trainers will advise you as to how long you may want to take to do this, there is however a minimum of 3 months between Training and Assessment.
- Assessment course: When you feel that you are competent in all areas of the award syllabus and meet all of the award requirements, book onto an assessment course. Requirements include:
• Minimum 18 years of age
• Have attended a training course or been granted exemption from training
• Have recorded a minimum of 100 different lead climbs at least half of which must be a grade of French 6a or above have belayed a lead climber on at least 100 routes
• Have assisted or observed at least 5 teaching leading sessions delivered by a suitably qualified person
• Hold a valid first aid certificate
All HCC’s courses include equipment, instruction and VAT. It is important that you read the recommended clothing list.
This course will be run with a minimum of four people. Insufficient uptake may result in the cancellation of the course.
